Umrah is a spiritual journey through which millions of Muslims seek forgiveness, closeness, and blessings from Allah.

This Makkan pilgrimage includes circling the Kaaba (Tawaaf) and walking between the Safa and Marwah mountains (Sa’i).

During this time, you will also offer prayers at Masjid Al Haram and explore many historical Islamic places.

There are many steps to this journey such as arranging the visa, booking flights and hotels, securing transportation, reliable guides, and finding the right package.

With so many tour operators, packages, and other offerings, finding the right one customized to your needs can be overwhelming.

Don’t Worry! We will discuss and cover everything about Umrah in 2025, from how to perform it in the best way, and the best times to do it to the most customizable packages, ensuring that you will find meaning and comfort in your spiritual endeavor.

What is Umrah?

Prophet Ibrahim (AS) built the Kaaba in 2000 BCE for One True God and was the first to perform Tawa’af.

Then, he left his wife (Bibi Hajra) and baby Ismail in the barren lands of Makkah under God’s command.

When Ismail (AS) started crying due to thirst, she searched for water frantically between the Safa and Marwah mountains.

Bibi Hajra ran seven times (Sa’i) in total, and this eventually caused the miraculous appearance of Zamzam.

This water source attracted the Jurhum tribe which settled there with Bibi Hajra and Baby Ismail.

After Ibrahim’s return, they rebuilt the Kaaba and established those practices to show devotion to Allah.

However, over centuries, these rituals were twisted by the Amaliq and Quraysh tribes, who established around 360 idols in the Kaaba and were indulgent in corrupt rituals such as the naked Tawaaf.

Finally, Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) conquered the Kaaba and removed those deities in 630 AD.

He performed four Umrahs and reestablished all the Umrah rituals in their purest form.

How to do Umrah the right way?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4OkHqu1KsA

The Umrah of the present day involves four major stages.

The Sacred state, or Ihram is the first stage, during which believers wear white garments, check their intentions (Niyat), and recite Talbiyah.

The second stage is the Tawaaf which involves seven counterclockwise rounds of the Kaaba.

Sa’i or the third stage involves seven rounds between Safa and Marwah.

A trip from Safa to Marwah is counted as one round, and a trip from Marwah to Safa is counted as the second round.

Starting from Safa, the seventh round ends at Marwah Hills.

Halq/ Taqsir is the last stage of Umrah during which believers shave their heads to show their humility and renewal of faith.

What is the Significance of Umrah?

Umrah is directly connected to the legacies and practices of Ibrahim (AS) and Prophet Mohammed (PBUH).

Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) said “Performers of Hajj and Umrah are Allah’s guests, and if they call upon him, He answers (Ibn Majah).

It offers an opportunity for spiritual purification, self-reflection, and transformation.

Detach from worldly affairs, and dive deep into Islamic heritage.

You will understand the concept of patience and reliance on God’s mercy when you will perform rituals like Tawa’af and Sa’i.

This activity also strengthens the notion of unity and devotion because believers from diverse backgrounds assemble to pray as one at Allah’s house.

Finally, Umrah will familiarize you with the major pilgrimage of the Hajj, and fulfill your lifelong desire to visit the Kaaba. Read our article on 5 Umrah Facts to understand it closely.

How long Does it take to do Umrah?

Umrah requires four mandatory things: the state of Ihram, Tawaaf, Sa’ii, and Halq/taqseer.

You will reach your Mecca accommodation within an hour if you are coming from overseas.

To perform Tawaaf, you would be circumambulating around the holy Kaaba.

This will take somewhere between 3 and 4 hours if the place is crowded.

To perform the Sa’i rituals, you walk between the Safa and Marwa hills, which will take around 2 hours.

Finally, the last part will be shaving off heads for men (halq), and partial hair trimming for women (taqseer).

So, the entire Umrah can be performed in a day.

What is the Difference between Shia and Sunni Umrah?

Although the core rituals are the same for both Shia and Sunni Muslims, there are minor differences in niyat, supplications, intercessions, and rules for haircutting.

This table highlights the differences between Shia and Sunni Umrah:

Category Sunni Umrah Shia Umrah
Niyat or Intention Loud declaration of Niyat and Talabiyah The main focus is on Umrah rituals and the Prophet’s mosque
Tawaaf 7 counterclockwise rounds of Kaba, while keeping the left shoulder towards it Similar to Sunni Umrah, but with more emphasis on the state of Wudhu (purity)
Sa’i 7 rounds between Safa and Marwah hills Similar to Sunni Umrah, but running is not stressed as much
Taqsir/Halq The main focus is on Umrah rituals and the Prophet’s mosque Only trimming is mandatory for both men and women
Supplications prescribed supplications from the Prophet’s Hadith Supplications from Iman Ali and Imam Hussain
Visiting Jannat-al-Baqi and other shrines Main focus is on Umrah rituals and the Prophet’s mosque Heavy focus on visiting the graves of Ahl-ul-Bayt, and Jannat-al-Baqi
Intercession Direct prayers to Allah Men shave off their heads completely, while women only trim a part of it
